You are God and Don’t Know It

In the post, Who Are You, Really?, I talked about how you are not your body, you are not your thoughts, you are pure awareness. That pure awareness is linked to the awareness of every other conscious entity in the Universe through a medium we call Mind. This Mind is a objective thing. It does not have a mind of its own, it is like an infinite computer that carries out the programs of its users. The users are all life forms that have free will. Our ability to choose makes us the subjects throughout this objective Universe.

But where is God in all this?

Many religions have an anthropomorphic view of God. A big man in the sky. An emperor sitting on a throne directing the universe, orchestrating the lives of his creations like a puppet master putting on a show.

Most religions also define God as having a certain set of attributes:

  • Omnipotent – all powerful
  • Omniscience – all knowing
  • Omnipresent – present everywhere at the same time
  • Omnibenevolent – all good

This anthropomorphic God-emperor of the universe is logically inconsistent. If God were a being sitting on a throne where you could go and stand in front of Him, then He would be a limited being. He would be at only one point in space and time, and not omnipresent. He would be limited in size. If He were human size then then there could be a giant human bigger and stronger. If He were the size of the Lincoln Monument, nineteen feet, then there could be a being that is twenty feet. Whatever size you pick for the being you call God, it would be limited and there could always be something bigger. Even calling God “He” imposes a limit. Being male he would lack female qualities.

For God to be omnipresent, God would need to be part of the fabric of the universe, so the whole universe is contained in God and God is beyond the universe. To be omnipotent God would need to be the source of all power in the universe. To be Omniscience God would need to be source of all knowledge. To be omnibenevolent God would need to be the source of all good.

It’s like the concept of infinity. Take for example integer numbers. There are infinite numbers, infinite odd numbers and infinite even numbers. You have infinities within infinities. But really it is ideas that are infinite and God is the source of all ideas.

If God is the source of all intelligence, then the source of your intelligence is God. Therefore you are God. Or at least a part of God, an aspect of the infinite source.

We are part of a universal mind but have an illusion of separation.

God is the collective consciousness operating through infinite Mind to manifest the material universe. We can think of the Universe as the body of God, the realm of knowledge, information, and law as the Mind of God, and you, I, and every living thing as part of the spirit of God. There is one Spirit, one Mind, one Universe, and we are a part of it.

So yes, whether you know it or not, you are God.
